Writing Workshop
Year 6 had an inspiring visit from author Chris Connaughton as part of their mystery writing unit. The children listened to a retelling of The Upper Berth before continuing the story themselves, using the suspense-writing techniques they have been developing in class. In the afternoon, we enjoyed hearing some of the children’s imaginative endings before discovering how the story actually concluded. The day finished with the opening of Sherlock Holmes: The Final Problem, perfectly leading into the next stage of our writing unit. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and took lots of inspiration for writing exciting mystery stories.
Autumn Term Open Morning
Year 6 welcomed parents into English lessons to share a snapshot of current learning. Families observed pupils applying their SPaG knowledge while completing LTRs and many commented on the accuracy and confidence shown. We are pleased to highlight the substantial progress pupils have made in these skills since the start of the year.
The session then moved on to figurative language. Pupils took part in one of our oracy games to deepen their understanding of key terms and definitions before working together to identify and discuss examples. This gave parents the chance to see how talk is used to strengthen comprehension and support richer writing.
It was a valuable opportunity to share the children’s achievements, and we hope parents enjoyed seeing the learning process in action.
