Just before the Easter break, our Year 3 and 4’s took part in a Cross Country event at Gangwarily and for once it wasn’t raining! Well done to the Year 3 girls team who placed 9th out of 24 teams with personal performances from Katie (9th), Megan (29th) and Ava (48th) out of 93 runners. The Year 3 boys teams who came 5thand 15th out of 30 teams with solid team performances from Timothy (14th), Charlie (18th) and Austin (22nd) out of 94 runners.
The Year 4 girls needed 3 runners to have a team placing, but super individual performances from Maddie (12th) and Freya (13th) out of 88 other competitors. The boys in Year 4 ran well too, with a standout run from Bertie placing 22nd out of a huge field of 91 runners.
Mrs Dallyn was so proud of all the children who took part. She was particularly impressed with how confident they were in front of many other competitors and spectators. They listened well, followed all instructions, supported each other showing superb sportsmanship and respect for one another. It was lovely to see them cheering each other spectacularly from the side lines and every runner displayed true grit, determination, resilience, and courage.

Last week, our school choir had the wonderful opportunity to perform alongside a local ladies’ choir led by Mrs Desborough. The performance was truly special, with our pupils standing proudly on one side and the ladies’ choir on the other, creating a beautiful and harmonious atmosphere.

The choirs sang a variety of songs, both individually and together, showcasing their talent, confidence, and enthusiasm. It was a joy to see our pupils performing with such energy and pride, and the collaboration between the two choirs made the event even more memorable.

The combined voices filled the room with warmth and music, creating a truly uplifting experience for everyone who attended. All of the performers did an incredible job, and it was a performance to remember.

It was fabulous to be able to take 2 teams of eager and excited competitors to compete against another 13 other teams from across the New Forest. The sportshall was full of both competitors and spectators with lots of people watching and cheering. This made for a fabulous atmosphere but also was a good learning opportunity for our young teams of Year 3 and 4’s!
Each child took part in a running, jumping and throwing event and then there was the exciting mixed Year sprint relay. Our children were superb in both demonstrating patience; waiting for their turn, motivating each other and doing their best throughout. For many of our athletes, this was their first New Forest School Partnership event and we were really thrilled with our results of 9th and 11th out of 15. We could see that some schools were really well prepared and practised but this time for us it was all about enjoying the opportunity and having fun.
Thanks again to all the help and support from parents for being there with snacks and words of encouragement.

Ringwood Junior School celebrated World Book Day on 5th March and children and staff embraced the opportunity to celebrate the magic of books. Walking through the school gates were ‘Enola Holmes’, ‘Robin Hood’, ‘Hermione Granger, ‘Harry Potter, ‘Mr Twit, ‘Beth Mead’, Slime, a Bearded Dragon, ‘Tom Gates’, ‘Lottie Brooks’, ‘Mary Poppins’, footballers, rugby players, gymnasts, horse riders and many more wonderful book characters.

Children and staff were also given the option of wearing cosy pyjamas to school. We are passionate about encouraging reading with children and it is important that children view reading as a cosy, safe and relaxing thing to do. We also want to encourage positive reading habits, and reading at bedtime is a great way to create a mindful, wind down time at the end of the day.

Year 3 staff acknowledged, ‘The Huey’s in The New Jumper’, Year 4 staff dressed in their pyjamas, Year 5 staff dressed as characters from, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and Year 6 paid homage to, ‘101 Dalmatians’.

The children brought their books in to school and they spent time in class sharing these as well as staff also sharing their favourite books. Dedicated time was spent enjoying all sorts of books and book related activities, both inside and outside in the sunshine.

Mrs Evans, Headteacher, and Mrs Dallyn, Library Leader commented ‘World Book Day continues to develop children's enthusiasm and enjoyment for reading which extends beyond the classroom, encouraging the development of positive reading habits.’

We enjoyed all of the different stations on offer to challenge our balance and co-ordination, but our favourite was the trampoline, acro and vault.
We really pushed ourselves to improve our skills on the beam, with high kicks and walking backwards and we created some fabulous floor sequences. It was great to work together, in fact we didn’t stop moving all afternoon!
Thank you to Mrs Anthony, who accompanied the children and was extremely proud of their behaviour and attitude. Well done for being RJS Superstars!
If you are interested in joining a gym club, our local one is Gymstars in Ferndown.

Our Year 6 pupils recently took part in Bikeability cycle training, a national programme designed to help children develop the skills and confidence to cycle safely on today’s roads.

Throughout the week, pupils learned how to carry out basic bike safety checks, ensuring their bikes were roadworthy before setting off. They practised key cycling skills including starting and stopping safely, maintaining control, signalling clearly, and positioning correctly on the road.

As their confidence grew, children developed their awareness of other road users and learned how to make safe decisions at junctions, around parked cars, and in different traffic situations. The training took place in real road environments, giving pupils valuable, practical experience.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity and many rose to the challenge, showing great perseverance and determination as they developed new skills. We were particularly proud to hear that the instructors complimented our pupils on their excellent behaviour and positive attitudes throughout the training.

Bikeability not only improves cycling ability, but also encourages independence, responsibility, and road safety awareness. We are incredibly proud of how maturely and sensibly our Year 6 pupils approached the experience.

As part of Safer Internet Day 2026, pupils took part in activities and discussions to help them understand how to use technology — including Artificial Intelligence (AI) — safely and responsibly.

Children explored what Safer Internet Day is and why it is important, thinking about how the internet and digital tools are part of everyday life. They learned that AI is a type of computer technology designed to do some of the things a human brain can do, such as helping with translations, homework support, playing music through smart speakers, or generating ideas.

Through examples and discussion, pupils considered the different ways people use AI in daily life and were encouraged to think critically about how technology can be helpful but also needs to be used carefully. A key focus was on staying safe online, including knowing when something doesn’t feel right and understanding that they should never deal with online worries alone.

Children also identified trusted adults they can talk to if they have concerns about something they see or do online. The session finished by encouraging pupils to think positively and creatively about how they might use AI safely and responsibly in the future.

At playtime, children are encouraged to take part in physical games either on an individual basis or in a group. Recently, many children have purchased, or have borrowed, a Diablo and are now perfecting their skills to demonstrate a number of different tricks. The children enjoy learning from one another.

Other children enjoy taking part in dance routines. We are fortunate enough to have a speaker on the playground and so groups of children enjoy choreographing their own dance routines with one another and then performing them.

Playtime is a time when the children can relax, have fun with one another and this supports their overall mental health and positive wellbeing.

The children participated in bowling, noughts and crosses game, bowls, new age curling, seated football, archery, axe throwing and a blind obstacle course.

All of the children showed determination and resilience and they worked effectively as a team. Both myself and Miss Whalley were very impressed with their overall behaviour and their communication skills. The children were excellent ambassadors for the school.

Last week, the girls performed brilliantly at another football tournament, facing stiff competition across Dorset with the chance of joining the boys’ team in representing AFCB at the Premier League Final in June. Mrs Dallyn was extremely proud and impressed with both the skill level and determination as they were relentless in both attack and defence. Many goals were both scored and saved to keep all matches close with even a penalty being scored in the process!

All of the girls were positive and upbeat, even with some losses. They demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship-all of them putting themselves forward to sit certain games out to ensure they all had game time in the 6 a side games. They all encouraged and praised each other and all shook the hands of every player they played against and thanked every referee adult from AFC Bournemouth.

Although we didn’t make the final this time, it was another positive performance that they can be proud of and take into their next matches as, fingers crossed, they can continue enjoying football into next season. We are so grateful for the parental support, which helped to boost the girls too.

This was a highly anticipated event, that the boys had planned and trained for and this was evident as they were unbeaten in all 7 matches to be crowned Premier League Primary Stars U11 champions and representatives for AFCB at the Finals later in June.
Not only was the skill level incredible, but every boy played their part in every match and they supported each other in words and in actions. I was truly blown away by the mature approach they showed to each other, to the opponents and they absolutely deserved this win.
I can’t wait for the final in June!

Together, with other New Forest Schools, we had a great time meeting the young leaders, who gave us top tips on how to perform routines, stretches and vaults.
We completed a carousel of different exercises and equipment as we moved around as a small team. The gymnastics trampoline was a highlight, together with the springboard, beams and performing floor routines, with ease on a sprung floor made our round-offs much easier.
I’m sure this experience has encouraged our children to explore local gym or Acro groups to continue to improve on their natural abilities.
I’m looking forward to taking some Year 3 and 4 children to repeat this experience in the next few weeks.

The children listened to a retelling of The Upper Berth before continuing the story themselves, using the suspense-writing techniques they have been developing in class. In the afternoon, we enjoyed hearing some of the children’s imaginative endings before discovering how the story actually concluded. The day finished with the opening of Sherlock Holmes: The Final Problem, perfectly leading into the next stage of our writing unit. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and took lots of inspiration for writing exciting mystery stories.

We saw so many happy faces—children and adults alike.

Our wonderful choir opened the Fayre by singing a beautiful selection of Christmas songs they’ve been learning, setting the perfect festive tone for the day.

Our Fayres could never be successful without the incredible support of our parents and the dedication of our wonderful teachers who work alongside the PTA.

Thank you for supporting the PTA and, in turn, supporting our school. We truly appreciate every one of you.

In total, there were 9 schools that took part. All of the children experienced a number of different, inclusive sports in a fun environment. This involved participating in curling, blind hurdles, noughts and crosses, spike ball, shuttles, bean bag target, boccia and archery.

The focus was to promote communication, team work and turn taking as they completed the activities provided. All of the children enjoyed the event and showed high levels of resilience and sportsmanship throughout. Each child earned a certificate that will be presented to them during celebration assembly. A huge well done to all involved!

Last week, we were able to take 2 teams to a New Forest schools event held at the Ringwood AFCB Community hub. We played on the grass this time instead of the Astro turf and Miss Bastow accompanied our keen players.
Miss Bastow reported that the girls really enjoyed themselves and played really well supporting each other to score many goals across the 5 matches during the afternoon. Although this was a friendly event, medals were given to a player on each team for demonstrating the School Games values of Teamwork, Passion, Determination, Self-Belief, Respect and Honesty and in our teams Aria and Lara were awarded a medal by the Young Leaders from Ringwood School.

The teams are mixed Year 5 and Year 6 with all children competing in an individual run, jump and throw events along with a relay event using the kickboards to turn. It was lovely to be able to give more children a chance to participate a long with others who had previous experience.
There were 7 teams at the event and it was lovely to be involved in this from a competitive perspective but also it was great to see the children try so hard both individually and to gain points for their team. Our Red Team were really pleased to come away with their Bronze medals!
Thank you to all the parent supporters who were essential in making it a very memorable event for both our teams.

It was trickier playing on the grass rather than the astroturf pitches at the Ringwood hub, which many of the boys were used to, as the ball tended to stick to the muddy, wet ground rather than bouncing high. However, we soon settled into our stride and were able to mount decent attacking play especially the Year 3 team, who were confident both with their possession and passing amongst each other. The Year 4 team needed to work a little harder in defence but soon some goals came and they supported their confident goalkeeper with set pieces and started to learn how to use the pitch size to the best advantage.
It was lovely to see some great team working, sharing the role of goalkeeper in Year 3 and encouraging words during a penalty situation in Year 4.

Well done boys! I know Mr Crane will look forward to working on some strategies with you at his after-school club.

Both teams played at least 8 matches, which were exhausting to watch, but the girls showed great stamina and fitness levels throughout and fortunately we had no serious injuries.
The first few matches were goalless but we were attacking and defending well but not quite able to score the goals we deserved. As the event progressed, our set pieces fell into place and it was fantastic to see their skill, pitch positioning and teamwork develop. The shots were on target from both teams with some lovely team celebrations
I know the girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves and they can’t wait for more football events to be able to play and support each other. It was great to see so many teams participating in Girls Football, it shows how much the popularity of football continues to grow with girls and supports the FA Girls programme fantastically well.
Thanks again to our supporting parents, who were cheering almost as loudly me from the side lines.

This event is a 3-runner relay race, where each competitor runs the course, green to amber to red, tagging the next runner, who waits excitedly in the change-over box. It encourages teamwork, perseverance and resilience as the children run independently with efforts building towards the final runner placing at the end of the event.
It was lovely to see the children getting around the course without injuries, having fun, supporting each other and digging deep for the team.
Our girls’ teams were rewarded with 30th and 38th placing out of 50 teams and the boys did an incredible job of motivating each other around the course on every lap as they were so close to each other in placing 7th, 8th and 20th out of a field of 52 teams from other New Forest schools.
This event is great preparation for the individual event next term and once again, I am very grateful to the parents who supported with transport.

We had so much fun working together to problem solve during these races and we showed super determination and Percy perseverance during the over-sized sack race. We were pleased to see the sunshine and enjoyed some great parent support.

An unforgettable day of determination, teamwork, and healthy competition!

This year’s Sports Day was a fantastic showcase of energy, enthusiasm and sportsmanship from our youngest pupils in year three, all the way up to our experienced athletes in year 6.

The sun made an appearance as the children took to the field ready to give their best in a wide range of athletic events – and they certainly delivered!

The morning field events included shotput, javelin, discus, vortex throw, triple jump, slalom runs and the children’s favourite, the Tug-O-War! It was brilliant to see how much effort each student put into their throws, with many achieving personal bests. There was a clear sense of pride in their accomplishments and a wonderfully supportive atmosphere as peers cheered and celebrated each other’s successes.

The afternoon track events did not disappoint either. The sprinting events were a highlight – from quick bursts over 80 and 100 metres to the impressive stamina of those competing in the 200, 300, 400 and 600m races. Children pushed themselves, showing real determination and focus. The 400m and 600m races were a test of endurance in the heat, and it was inspiring to see every runner cross the finish line with grit and cheered on loudly by peers and the fantastic supportive crowd of parents and carers.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the day was the attitude of the children. From high-fives at the finish line to encouraging teammates in their events, there was a strong sense of community and support. While competition was fierce at times, it was always underpinned by fairness and encouragement.

We are incredibly proud of all our young athletes. Thank you to everyone, particularly our sports leaders, who helped to make it a success.

After the chrysalids softened and became transparent, the butterflies pushed through first with their legs. They then crawled the rest of the way out of the chrysalids and hung upside down from their own chrysalis. The butterflies then began the process of expanding and drying their wings to enable them to fly.

Meconium is pumped into the wings and back into the body of the butterfly. The small amounts that stay in the veins of the wings dry and harden, making their wings strong for when they are ready to fly.

It can take up to two hours for a butterfly’s wings to completely dry. After, the butterfly takes its first flight and then squirt out any extra meconium from its body.

We kept the butterflies in their net habitats for a few more days to enable them to build up their strength. They were fed with pieces of orange and strawberries, plus a sponge soaked with a sugar solution.

It was a truly wonderful experience for us all to be so up close to this life cycle and all the children enjoyed taking part in the release of our new friends on our back playground. We have spotted the butterflies many time since!

May we express our gratitude once again to the PTA for funding this project for us.

We hope that this, combined with the fantastic support from parents and carers, will have given the children a taste of the London Marathon spirit during the event.

I was really pleased to give so many children the experience of running in this long-distance event and it was great to also develop their teamworking skills.
This event is quite involved and as there are strict rules regarding the running order of the children in each race. Each team is made up of 6 children and so we had 2 Year 4 teams and 1 team of Year 3 children. There are 2 races with each race over 3 laps with 2 boys and 1 girl running in the 1st race and then 2 girls and 1 boy running their laps in the second race. They wear a green number to start, passing to the runner with the yellow number, who hands over to the final runner wearing the red team number. The combined placings of the 3rd runner in race 1 and 2 are totalled to provide a score.
I was proud of all the children running as for some this was their first school sports competition. Everyone gave their all and we all managed to complete the laps without injury, which was a huge relief! The Year 4 teams came 7th and 18th and the Year 3 team finished 16th out of 28 teams.
Keep running!

A few weeks ago, 9 teams from across the New Forest participated in the Tennis qualifier event, completing matches throughout the entire afternoon with non-stop short court action. Although tennis is an individual sport, we joined our scores together to form a team total. Before the matches, we demonstrated integrity as we ranked ourselves from 1-4. The player seeded 1 then played the seed 1 player from all the other teams, with seeds 2, 3 and 4 following suit. All points were added together to gain a team total from each match. We needed to focus to keep control of the ball and try and outwit our opponents with the placing of the ball within the service box. We all improved our tennis throughout the day with the Year 4 team winning the event and gaining gold medals. This team has now qualified for the New Forest tennis finals and will play against another 15 teams in June. It will be our own Wimbledon warm up!

It was great to be able to spot their smiling faces on TV in the BBC 2 Highlights on Sunday. Everyone in assembly spoke about it being a really enjoyable experience, a great challenge and soaking up the atmosphere. I know lots of fabulous memories were made.

It was tricky at first to get used to playing with children from different year groups, but we soon adapted and showed good teamwork to score and defend well so we won a couple of matches. “It was nice to be able to play in different positions,” said Seb.

There were so many runners in each race and I was relieved when we all managed to get around the course without injury.
Well done to the Year 3 girls team who were just short of a bronze medal in 4th out of 27 teams with personal performances from Freya (11th), Maddie (18th) and Erin (27th) out of 100 runners. Well done to the Year 3 boys teams who came 13th and 20th out of 35 teams with a standout run from Bertie, who placed 24th out of 111 runners.
The Year 4 girls team achieved 17th out of 31 teams with a super first cross country run from Tamsin, who placed 29th out of 108 competitors. Boys in Year 4 ran well too, just short of medals in 6th and 19th out of 39 teams. Jordan (12th), Oliver (20th) and Oscar(28th) did so well to place highly out of a huge field of 151 runners!
Well done everyone and thanks again for parent support with transport.

Chris shared a selection of short stories based on a maritime theme, linking to our recent maritime history project. The children heard versions of The Odyssey, Robinson Crusoe and Long John Silver. We also had some of the children's parents and carers join us, and we hope that the children will be inspired to follow up their morning session with some reading at home. We will be doing some more reading and writing based on the stories in school.

Over the past term, the children have been working hard to develop their musical skills, and this special performance was a wonderful opportunity to showcase their progress.

With parents in the audience, Year 5 children played a selection of pieces, demonstrating their growing confidence and ability. From the very first notes, it was clear how much effort they had put into learning their instruments, with each student playing with enthusiasm and focus.

A huge well done to all our Year 5 clarinet players for their dedication and perseverance! We would also like to thank Mrs Fay, the Listen 2 Me teacher, for her expert guidance and encouragement throughout the term. The performance was a joy to watch, and we look forward to seeing the children continue their musical journey in the future.

The Sportshall was full of both competitors and spectators with lots of people watching and cheering. This made for a fabulous atmosphere but was also quite busy for our young team of Year 3 and 4’s! Each child took part in a running, jumping and throwing event and then there was the exciting mixed Year sprint relay. Our children were superb in both demonstrating patience; waiting for their turn, motivating each other and doing their best throughout the 4 hours. Although the Year 4’s were reasonably well practised, for the Year 3’s, this was their first taste of real competition and we came away pleased with our results - placing 13th out of 18 teams. We all really enjoyed it and will be looking to encourage more children to join in the preparation after school club next year. Thanks again to all the help and support from parents for being there with snacks and words of encouragement.
