D.T. Subject Overview
Later this term, we will be designing and making a healthy sandwich. In preparation for this, we have been learning about the different food groups and the importance of eating a balanced diet, to stay healthy.
We began by sorting foods into the different food groups and distinguishing between healthy and unhealthy choices. Using this knowledge, children have shown that they can plan a balanced meal, with all the food groups represented.
Afterwards, we researched the history of the sandwich and considered different bread and filling options, making observations about appearance, smell, flavour and texture.
Later, we will be inventing sandwiches which meet our design criteria and then making our sandwiches, demonstrating good safety and hygiene, while developing key skills and techniques in the handling of kitchen equipment and ingredients.
Finally, I’m sure the children will enjoy eating and evaluating their finished products!
