Spring Term

Bikeability

Our Year 6 pupils recently took part in Bikeability cycle training, a national programme designed to help children develop the skills and confidence to cycle safely on today’s roads.

Throughout the week, pupils learned how to carry out basic bike safety checks, ensuring their bikes were roadworthy before setting off. They practised key cycling skills including starting and stopping safely, maintaining control, signalling clearly, and positioning correctly on the road.

As their confidence grew, children developed their awareness of other road users and learned how to make safe decisions at junctions, around parked cars, and in different traffic situations. The training took place in real road environments, giving pupils valuable, practical experience.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity and many rose to the challenge, showing great perseverance and determination as they developed new skills. We were particularly proud to hear that the instructors complimented our pupils on their excellent behaviour and positive attitudes throughout the training.

Bikeability not only improves cycling ability but also encourages independence, responsibility, and road safety awareness. We are incredibly proud of how maturely and sensibly our Year 6 pupils approached the experience.

Open Morning

We were delighted to welcome parents into school for our Year 6 open morning, where they were invited to take part in a mathematics lesson as part of our statistics unit. The lesson focused on drawing and interpreting line graphs.

The session began with our long-term retrieval task and some arithmetic questions, before moving on to discussing a range of graphs together on the board. Parents then supported their children in independently drawing their own line graphs.

The morning also provided an opportunity for parents to look at recent practice SATs papers and see the progress the children have made. These will be sent home before half-term.

It was wonderful to see so many parents in attendance, and we would like to thank everyone who came along for their continued support.

Writing Workshop

Year 6 had an inspiring visit from author Chris Connaughton as part of their mystery writing unit. The children listened to a retelling of The Upper Berth before continuing the story themselves, using the suspense-writing techniques they have been developing in class. In the afternoon, we enjoyed hearing some of the children’s imaginative endings before discovering how the story actually concluded. The day finished with the opening of Sherlock Holmes: The Final Problem, perfectly leading into the next stage of our writing unit. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and took lots of inspiration for writing exciting mystery stories.

Autumn Term Open Morning

Year 6 welcomed parents into English lessons to share a snapshot of current learning. Families observed pupils applying their SPaG knowledge while completing LTRs and many commented on the accuracy and confidence shown. We are pleased to highlight the substantial progress pupils have made in these skills since the start of the year.

The session then moved on to figurative language. Pupils took part in one of our oracy games to deepen their understanding of key terms and definitions before working together to identify and discuss examples. This gave parents the chance to see how talk is used to strengthen comprehension and support richer writing.

It was a valuable opportunity to share the children’s achievements, and we hope parents enjoyed seeing the learning process in action.

"It was good to see how my daughter learns in class. She was very engaged and appeared to be enjoying the topic."

"Excellent class, enjoyed seeing my daughter's work. Really informative."

"Great to see the children at work. Would love to come again. Thank you!"

"Very enjoyable morning, lovely to be a part of a lesson and experience an English lesson."

"It's always great to have the opportunity to come in and share the class. Thank you!"
